Rows Windows, or, How the Other Half Gives
Recreation of row homes from Jacob Riis’s How the Other Half Lives with inset stained glass rose windows inspired by the Abbey of St. Denis, outside Paris. Riis used galvanizing photography to highlight the poverty of the tenement halls on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where immigrants lived in squalid conditions in the 1890s. Abbott Suger of the Abbey of St. Denis is credited as building the first elaborate gothic church in 1144 as well as amassing a treasury of sumptuous religious objects. What if the ostentatious wealth of the church were redistributed amongst the poor? We could all have a rose window. Wouldn't that be useful.

According to scripture, Jesus has two natures - divine and human. Or does he. Christians differ greatly on this point. Some passages cite his father as God, others Joseph, his mother as Mary, others the Holy Spirit. Why does it matter? Eternal salvation in heaven. Some believe only Jesus as God could have the power to save us, others believe only Jesus as human could suffer enough to be a saving sacrifice. With modern technology, maybe we could settle the father debate. Each field in this piece contains a reference to new testament passages debating the nature of Christ as God v. human.
God or man according to scripture? Let's keep score:
The Pietà is an iconic scene in Christian art that depicts the Virgin Mary lamenting over the body of Christ after the crucifixion. Though this moment is never described in the bible, artists imagine a scene of absolute sorrow and render it through sculpture and painting. Followers of Christianity find religious significance in reliving the pain of the Virgin Mary, a taste that artists attempt to satisfy by visually freezing her in a state of grief.
Factory farm animals such as pigs and cows are genetically engineered and selectively bred to be ideal for eating, regardless of the suffering of the animal or the long-term effect on the species. Though the state of these animals would never have been realized in nature, scientists and corporations imagine attributes that would be profitable and create them through genetic manipulation. Contemporary society finds gustatory pleasure in the consumption of these genetically modified meat products, a taste that scientists attempt to satisfy by scientifically suspending animals in a state of abnormality.
Following the release of Playtex’s nylon and elastic “Living Bra” in the 1950s, the under-endowed comedienne Phyllis Diller once despaired that “my Living Bra died of starvation”. This project is a living bra that can literally starve to death. A bra form is coated with cell cultures from the breast of the artist, when the nutrients in the agar are exhausted, the cells die. Promotional tagline: It’s like wearing your own skin!
We outsource everything these days, why not prayer? The robo-rosary is an ornate medieval-inspired box containing a motor that pulls a loop of rosary beads through a stationary hand. A recorded voice recites the prayers of the rosary. Because these groupings are called “decades” in Catholic faith, the robo-rosary can literally save you decades – just set it and forget it!
